As election season approaches, there's a familiar narrative that resurfaces within the Black community: the pressure to vote based on racial identity or out of opposition to political figures like Donald Trump.

This sentiment is particularly pronounced when discussing candidates like Kamala Harris, where debates about whether she’s “Black enough” distract from the real issues at hand.

But here’s the truth: race, hatred, and emotional reactions should not drive our political decisions.

Instead, it’s time to shift the conversation to policies like what candidates can actually do to improve the lives of Black Americans.

In the past, voting based on shared racial identity might have seemed like a meaningful step toward representation.

However, as we face complex challenges like economic inequality, disparities in healthcare, education, and the criminal justice system, it’s clear that simply electing a Black candidate is not enough.

What matters most is whether these candidates are offering real solutions to the problems Black Americans face.
